Cebuano is not a dialect, it is a language. If you refer to it as a dialect, it means that it is a local version of a language. The question is what language? Are you referring to Tagalog? Of course, Tagalog is intelligently different from Cebuano. If you are a tagalog speaker, you cannot understand Cebuano which is the main criterion of what a dialect is. A Dialect must be intelligibly understandable to the main language which makes it a dialect.
Most people are confused of what a dialect and a language it. Probably, it is the notion that Cebuano is a dialect because of its inferiority to Tagalog which is the widely understandable language of the Philippines, but not the widely spoken one. Based on geography alone, Cebuano is spoken in about 2/3 of the country while Tagalog is spoken only in the Katagalugan area.
I directly call your attention on this erroneous notion. I hope I might be a great help on this.
I am sorry but I am not making cebuano inferior to tagalog nor said that is roots from tagalog. I believe it is one of the dialects of the Pilipino language in general. I don't where our language or languages came from..that's it...if you think I am making Cebuanos lower than any other ethnic group in pinas..mali ka bai..kung mali ko sa akong understanding kung unsa dialect or language i stand corrected.
I would kill you for using the D-word to refer to ANY of our non-tagalog languages. But since I'm in a good mood, I'll just asshump you instead.
In Spain, people there have a good sense of identity. They would be quick to correct you if you call their native tongues (Catalan, Basque, Galician, Asturian) as dialects. You might even get blown to bits by some ETA fanatics.
